Rob Voigt

Assistant Professor of Linguistics

Hi there!

I’m a computational sociolinguist at UC Davis Linguistics, where I direct the Linguistic Mechanisms Lab. I recently moved from Northwestern Linguistics; students interested in working with me should apply to UC Davis.

I’m interested in natural language processing, social meaning, sociophonetics and interactional variation, Chinese and Japanese linguistics, gesture and embodiment, and applications of linguistic research to social good. I’m particularly interested in using computational methods to understand the linguistic mechanisms of social problems in domains like policing, gun violence, immigration, and mental health.

Thanks for stopping by, and I hope to see you around!

News and Updates

  • On April 30th we released a report with the NYPD Federal Monitor on a court-ordered study five years in the making, detailing the results of our work examining underdocumentation and consent search legality in NYPD street stops using AI and computational linguistic techniques. Jennifer Eberhardt and I also wrote an op-ed in Vital City explaining the study and arguing for greater use of AI and computational tools for analysis of police body camera footage to build accountability and trust.
  • I am serving as the general chair of the 2026 edition of the Meeting of the Society for Computation in Linguistics (SCiL), this year co-located as a workshop with the ACL conference in San Diego. Come join us!
